Dr. Lee M. Krug is a thoracic oncologist who specializes in the treatment of patients diagnosed with lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma.
His research is focused on developing emerging treatments, like immunotherapy, in clinical trials. Dr. Krug is also interested in refining current approaches to treating mesothelioma.
Cutting-Edge Mesothelioma Treatment
Researchers at Sloan-Kettering have more opportunities than any other cancer center to conduct clinical trials because the center treats such a high volume of mesothelioma patients. This ultimately means that that they have a higher chance of developing a breakthrough mesothelioma treatment.
Radiation oncologists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering developed intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which allows specialists to limit damage to healthy cells by targeting mesothelioma cells. They also spearheaded the use of radiation therapy like IMRT with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy weakens cancer cells and makes the targeted IMRT treatment more effective.
In addition to their innovative work with radiation therapy, researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering are currently developing new immunotherapy treatments, like tumor vaccines and anticancer viruses, that use the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.
Post-surgery Symptom and Pain Management
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center offers specialized pain management care through their Palliative Medicine Service. A team of doctors and nurses with extensive pain management experience help patients cope with the physical and psychological issues associated with recovery from major treatment, like an invasive surgery.

Emphasis on Supportive Care and Elderly Patients
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center is unique among cancer treatment centers because it emphasizes follow-up and supportive care. Patients recovering from surgery can take advantage of the Counseling Center, where patients and families can get support to help them adjust to life after receiving mesothelioma treatment.
The Center also provides seminars, support groups and lectures through their Resources for Life After Cancer program. This program helps patients with every aspect of the recovery process, ranging from symptom management to insurance issues. For example, patients who had pleural mesothelioma surgery can attend the Breathing Easier monthly workshop, where they learn how to adjust to life after receiving major lung surgery.
Sloan-Kettering also recognizes that mesothelioma patients who are 65 and older need special care. They have a team of geriatric specialists, including doctors, nurses, nutritionists and psychiatrists, who specialize in taking care of older patients.
